A Zipper Tin ?

Here is my contribution to the April Team Challenge.
A zipper tin!

I hope no one tries to unzip it!

I started with decorative paper, cutting sizes for the top, bottom and insides of the box.

Cut the zipper to fit the sides and used the main portion of the zipper on the front and then began to glue.

This was a challenge but fun!

April Team Challenge-The Mighty Zipper !

This coming month, our challenge is to take a common zipper and use it for something not normally used with a zipper.  These challenges are to stretch our creative minds out of our "normal" thus producing a harvest of new creative endeavors.  I have found this is really helpful when I get in a rut, or a slump for design.  Just doing something new is the key to stepping up our visions for new products, or improving old ones.

Here is my example of what I did with the zipper I received from Nadine, who sparked this challenge!
Below what this tank looked like without any adornment:  Above the finished Piece.  A necklace Zipper!
It has a zipper on top and at the bottom.  I added lace, large beige and small black.  Just hot glued, and the bottom can unzip up if you want.  Zip the top as low as you want and to take off and on.  A great new idea!  Who knows, I may make more in different colors.

I also glued on vintage navy blue accents in the shape of fans.  And roses at the top.  Kinda victorian don't you think?
I love the look, what do you think maybe do these for the benefit craft show in October?

now, what will YOU make with your zippers?  The Challenge is ON.  Everyone who enters get your photos here and links to your shop which equals more views to your products on Etsy!!

Oceanteam Challenge- UP-CYCLED or Repurposed !

From Hannah on Etsy, Her store is called Reprieve's Corner...... here is her story on this project:

I'm a member of the Etsy team, O. C. E. A. N. (Oregon Coast Etsy Artist Network). Every month the team captain will issue a challenge for the members. The following is a description of the March challenge (due by March 3rd):

"Create something new and usable, pretty to sell. It must be in Spring colors or spring theme. Think nesting, birds, flowers, etc in light greens, pinks, yellow and blue bird blue."

To be completely honest, I really struggled with this month's challenge. In the end, I decided to create a spring nest with hatching birds.

My project fulfills all of the requirements. The nest itself was a failed sewing project (I was attempting to sew a turtle stuffed animal but something went wrong). The incomplete sewing project definitely falls into the category of things that I would usually throw away!

Next, my room mate's grandmother was cleaning out her garage and came across a bag of old crafting supplies and odds and ends. It's not quite the same as visiting a thrift store, but close enough! The little birds and the old Easter eggs were inside the bag.

So, I gathered together all of the elements. I added some more fabric to the incomplete turtle shell to create a plush nest. I added some hand stitches to make it curve up on the sides. I then used a hot glue gun to attach the birds and eggs.

Then we have this Spring Bride Painting from Josies Art Attic on Etsy:

Spring Bride is an original acrylic painting on a recycled canvas. 7 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches
Lovely Work Josie!

This Comfy and cuddly Golden Yellow Afghan is from All Sunflowers On Etsy:

Rich golden yellow afghan with pink, white and blue stripes. Perfect for the back of the couch or an extra layer on the bed.

Measures about 56" square.

Acrylic and polyester blend for easy care. Machine washable and dryable.
This afghan is already laundered and ready to use or give as a gift.
NOTE:  I think she said this yarn was vintage or found in a thrift store and thus put it too good use.

These burlap table settings were repurposed by Salzanos on Etsy:  They were backed with yellow used fabric, and trimmed with used Jute twine.  The little flaws just made it look all  the more "rustic" country!  AND they have sold already to Europe male buyer!

Final entry on our team page for the challenge comes from Patti over at Altered State of Tin:

This piece was inspired by a challenge our Etsy Team (O.C.E.A.N. (Oregon Coast Etsy Artist Network) had this month.

The challenge was to create something using recycled items . When I was finished it looked like a wedding cake to me so that is why I call it a Wedding Cake Keepsake Box.

This box was created with the bride in mind.
Created from a round cardboard box measuring 5.5 " in diameter and 3.75" deep.

The outer bottom of the box has been covered with white satin ribbon and the outer lid is trimmed with white lace and satin ribbon trim. The top of the box is the original box design with pink background tiny black polka dots and dark pink rose buds. Accented with pick spotted feathers and a metal frame with a photo of a bride and groom inside glass. One corner of the frame has a pink fused glass heart. The inside lid is trimmed with white cotton eyelet trim.

This box looks like a wedding cake and would make a great gift for the bride to keep small memories in such as her garter, petals from her bouquet, the key to the bridal suite or any other sentimental item from her wedding or honeymoon.
*******************************************************************************

My thanks to all members who took time to enter the challenge and I hope we will pass this blog post on to our friends to come see all the awesome things these artists are working so hard to make!  We love their dedication and involvement!  I wonder what challenge is coming up.......hmmmmmm

Java Time at Cone 9!

Pam brought a quilt she was almost done with.  A vintage one that was in for a complete redo.  All she has left to do was put the trim around.   We all loved the vintage material on each butterfly and hearing how much work goes into doing a piece like this.  All the batting was crumbling, so it all had to be redone.  Awesome work Pam!
Lisa came for the first time (lady on far left) and brought a dear friend who is also a quilter.  I am sorry but already forgot her name!  We LOVED them both and enjoyed their company last friday for coffee!
Susan (in the pink on left ) brought a upcycled bag from kitty food, (also forgot to take a picture, where are you nadine?)  ;-)  Pam, Patti, Jan and sue were all there milling around and talking art!
Hope you can come some time to meet us, bring your latest creative endeavor for us all to see!

Coffee times have changed!

Our new day is Fridays, same time 11am.  Places vary so stay tuned to our team Facebook page.
This first pic is Susan who made a set of mixed media art for her bathroom.  It is so gorgeous!  That is her lovely daughter Heather sitting next to her.  Both will be opening their Etsy Store soon!  We will post their links as soon as they are up and running.

Patti and Jan at the table before the others arrived.  We forgot to get a team pic. once everyone came.  We were at cone 9 in the mall this last week.  The lady who runs the place just goes the extra mile to serve us and make us welcome!
Nadine brought some great new ideas and art she is working on.  As always her women art is fun and makes us smile!  Look for new things in her Etsy store as well.  Look for her links at the right of this blog.

Members always inspiring others!

Last week, Sisters Jan and Jan were able to come.  They came bearing gifts.  The first photo shows a new product that Jan from Portland brought, her hand made knitted cuffs for Patti.  This is her own design and Patti is proudly showing them off.  We all LOVED them!  So pretty and the details were perfect.
The buttons really show them off, and for patti it hides some arm and wrist bruises she gets now and then from her over eager dogs. (but they are so loving and cuddly even tho they are HUGE)
There were two prs but I forgot to take pictures of the ivory ones.  You can see in the pics how fashionable they are while wearing them.

This is Jan on the left who lives here in coos bay and her sister Jan on the right who lives in Portland.  The  bottom pictures show some Valentine cookies and hand made heart boxes they brought to the team members who came today!  psssst it pays to get there early too!

Our team has grown and it has grown in the friendship we have for each other.  One key is to keep a team in a positive mode.  We do not have a lot of "rules and regulations" but that one thing to inspire and share what we learn with each other as well as KEEP IT POSITIVE.
We are a diverse group with visionary and detail people.  This is GOOD.  The many minds then can work together as a whole toward solving problems like helping a new comer come up with a great name for their Etsy Shop or nicely critiquing each others work or plans for their store.  It all comes together.

One other big thing is INVOLVEMENT.  The only way to benefit from a team is to be involved.  This can be hard with families and work outside of doing your art.  But to reap you must sow.

Hats off to all the OCEAN team for another great year and starting a new one with determination to be a success and build friendships as well as enjoy the journey along the way!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas to you all.

A couple of weeks ago our Etsy Team had its annual Christmas Gift Exchange.

Linda, Carla and Eve

Nadine and Susan

We met for lunch and a had good conversation about our plans for the New Year.

Sue and Pamela

Sue brought this bust she is working on with her mosaic talents. Isn't he funny?

This has been a hard year for many with the economy the way it is. Lets pray that the New Year will bring good happy things to all of us.

Thank God many of our troops are coming home to their families for Christmas. I am sure there will be lots of happiness.

(The view from my kitchen window this morning)

Have a safe and Merry Christmas while you celebrate the birth of our savior.
God Bless You all
